If you are offered two embryos and it is your choice - it is worth balancing the chances of success of IVF against downsides of twin pregnancies. We perform single embryo transfer if we judge that you are at high risk of having multiple pregnancies, based on your medical history and the quality of your embryos. If you are undergoing your first or second fresh treatment cycle and the female age is less than 38 years and you have at least one top grade embryo, assessed on the day of transfer by an Embryologist, we will transfer a single embryo. Replacing a single embryo does not completely eliminate the chance of having a twin pregnancy. Identical twins do occur, however, this is a rare event, but still does happen.
Two embryos may increase your chances of successful IVF as we may not know which is the one!
Therefore it is a very individualised decision. At p4 fertility, we personalise treatment, we discuss your personalised prediction of success and chances of twins. With our participatory approach, you are the one who makes the final decision.
